Freshman hospitalized after being struck by car
A Syracuse University student ran into an SU freshman and then fled the scene at about 1a.m. Saturday on Comstock Avenue in front of Shaw Residence Hall.
The injured student was treated for multiple trauma and an abrasion above the left eye, SU Spokesman Kevin Morrow said.
The driver, identified by the car’s passenger and owner, SU sophomore Ryan Travers, as “Nick,” was driving the teal Honda Civic to Kimmel Dining Hall, he said.
Travers stayed at the scene, but “Nick” fled on foot, said Syracuse Police Officer Gary Bulinski. As of Saturday morning, it was not known whether drugs or alcohol played a role in the accident, but officers are investigating the possibility, Bulinski said.
The injured student, who had just left a party at the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity house, was unconscious as emergency personnel transported her to Crouse Hospital, Morrow said.
She was later transferred to a hospital closer to her home Sunday around 10:30 a.m., said Debbie Fulton, a nursing supervisor at Crouse Hospital.
Jessica Blinn, a sophomore French major, was on the Euclid side of Shaw when the car struck the student and screamed for someone to call the police. The car seemed to be traveling at a high speed when it struck the student, Blinn said.
“It only took a couple minutes,” Blinn said of the arrival of emergency personnel. “I was very impressed. They came very, very quickly.”
Public Safety officers, Syracuse Police, Syracuse University Ambulance, Rural Metro Ambulance and the Syracuse Fire Department all responded to the call, Morrow said. Comstock Avenue was closed from the intersection of Comstock and Euclid avenues to just after Shaw for several hours after the accident.
Morrow said “Nick” has not been identified at this point and does not think Travers will face disciplinary action within the university.
“I have no indication that he is facing disciplinary action from the university,” Morrow said. “I don’t know what the charge would be.”
