SUNY-ESF student dies in motorcycle crash

Caswell

A SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry student, James Caswell, 21, was killed Monday morning in Newburgh, N.Y., after his motorcycle hit the side of another vehicle.

The accident occurred around 7 a.m. when Caswell was riding down Route 17 and hit a vehicle pulling out of a parking lot, said Dan Holt of the Newburgh Police Department. The crash caused Caswell to be ejected from his motorcycle.

Caswell was admitted to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after, Holt said. The driver of the vehicle was taken to the hospital as well, and was released later that day.

No charges were filed against the driver, who told police he did not see Caswell coming down the road, but he did receive a ticket for ‘failure to yield the right of way,’ Holt said.

Caswell was a senior construction management major and a member of the Syracuse University cheerleading team. SU has not made any announcements for on-campus memorial services.
