Students celebrated National Chemistry Week and Mole Day on Sunday at the Chemistry in Health celebration at Manley Field House.

The chemistry department at the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry put on the event to highlight the connection between chemistry and healthy practices, according to an ESF news release.

Mole Day, Oct. 23, is held in honor of Avogadro’s number, 6.02 x 1023, which is the number of entities in a mole, an important measurement in chemistry and physics. The event began at 10:23 a.m. to commemorate the holiday, according to the release. The celebration featured chemistry demonstrations, prizes and health information, which all demonstrated the ways chemists improve health through education.

Along with ESF’s general chemistry students and the Alchemists Society, other participants in the event were students from Syracuse University, Onondaga Community College, Utica College, SUNY Cortland, Hamilton College and Le Moyne College. High school students from East Syracuse-Minoa, Fayetteville-Manlius, Jamesville-DeWitt and Jordon-Elbridge also participated, according to the release.

Before the start of Chemistry in Health, the inaugural Carol M. Baldwin ‘A Run for Their Life’ 15K run and 5K run and walk were held at 9 a.m. The run and walk ventured through the University Hill area as well as Armory Square, according to the release. The foundation was started by Carol Baldwin, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1990, according to the foundation’s website.
