Late-night cafe opens in ground-level lounge in DellPlain Hall

CORRECTION: In a previous version of this article, Justin Hirschhaut’s title was misstated. Hirschhaut is head of ventures for the Entrepreneurship Club.

A late-night cafe housed in the lounge on the ground floor of DellPlain Hall opened Thursday night.

The Breezeway Cafe is a collaboration among the Creativity, Innovation and Entrepreneurship Living and Learning Community — housed in DellPlain Hall — Syracuse University Food Services and the Entrepreneurship Club, said Justin Hirschhaut, head of ventures of the Entrepreneurship Club.

A cafe was located in DellPlain about 18 years ago, Hirschhaut said, but since it closed, there has been a void in the market that needed to be filled.

On opening night, managers and supervisors hoped to make about $200. Hirschhaut said they beat this goal, making approximately $460, even though the cafe was operating on decreased hours.

“I think we actually did much better than expected,” he said. “The first night, in the first 10 minutes, we had close to 40 people walk in the doors.”

The cafe serves various food items, including pizza, sandwiches, wraps and ice cream, among other things. Next weekend, the cafe will begin offering coffee and hot chocolate, Hirschhaut said.

Although the food comes from Food Services, Hirschhaut said the cafe’s food will have a creative spin on it, especially the desserts.

In the future, Hirschhaut said, cafe managers and supervisors hope to establish a specials menu and a delivery system.
