DPS increases staffing in preparation for Hurricane Sandy

The Department of Public Safety has replenished its supplies and is increasing staffing in light of Syracuse University’s announcement that classes are canceled due to Hurricane Sandy.

“We’re prepared to deal with the emergencies associated with the weather, and we’re fully-prepared to deal with any deterrence for crime,” DPS Chief Tony Callisto said.

DPS is increasing the number of staff members on-duty for the next 48 hours, he said, and has already ordered more flashlights and water for employees.

There will also be more vans for emergency shuttles and employees working at DPS’ Communications Center, Callisto said. The communications center is backed up by a generator and will not be negatively affected in the event of a power outage, he said.

Unlike the March 7, 2011 snowstorm that canceled classes, Callisto said the availability of information ahead of time has made preparations for DPS much easier.

Students are encouraged to stay indoors, though DPS’ offices and phone lines will be open, Callisto said.
