Murray named Tewaaraton Award finalist

For the second year in a row, Syracuse has a Tewaaraton Award finalist.

Junior attack Alyssa Murray is one of the five finalists for this year’s Tewaaraton Award, given to the top women’s lacrosse player in the country.

Murray, the Big East Attack Player of the Year and a unanimous first-team All-Big East selection, led the league with 90 points. She topped SU with 34 assists and finished second on the team with 56 goals. This season, she moved into fifth place on SU’s all-time scoring list with 238 points.

Nationally, the West Babylon, N.Y., native ranks sixth in points and 10th in goals scored and points per game. Last year, Murray led the nation with 105 points and 74 goals.

She is the third Syracuse player ever to be nominated for the award, though no SU player has won it since it was created in 2001. Senior attack Michelle Tumolo was a finalist a year ago and current assistant coach Katie Rowan was a finalist in 2008.

The other finalists for this year include Maryland attack Alex Aust and midfielder Katie Schwarzmann, last year’s winner, North Carolina midfielder Kara Cannizzaro and Florida goalie Mikey Meagher.



The five men’s and women’s candidates will be invited to the 13th annual Tewaaraton Award Ceremony on May 30 at the National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, D.C.
