Despite taking a deep pay cut from her salary at SU, Chancellor Nancy Cantor will be one of the top-earning administrators of all three Rutgers University campuses.

Cantor will become chancellor of Rutgers University’s Newark campus starting Jan. 1 and will make $385,000 a year as a base salary. She could earn up to $38,500 a year in bonuses if she meets annual goals set by her and Rutgers University president Robert Barchi, said E.J. Miranda, director of media relations for Rutgers University.

As the university’s president, Barchi makes $650,000 a year in base salary, the Star-Ledger reported on June 20. Rutgers University charges $23,676 a year in tuition for out-of-state students, according to its admissions site.

Cantor made the third-highest salary at Syracuse University in 2011, earning $648,146 a year in base salary, with $290,815 in other reportable compensation, according to the Internal Revenue Service Form 990 the university filed for fiscal year 2011.

Cantor took a voluntary pay cut when the recession hit, reducing her salary to just more than $615,000. The pay cut expired in 2010, and her salary returned to its original level.

An additional $150,000 in deferred compensation will be waiting for Cantor if she stays in the position all five years and shows “satisfactory performance,” Miranda said.

He added Rutgers will give Cantor $3,000 per month in housing allowance because the Newark chancellor’s residence is currently undergoing renovations. The allowance will end when the construction is complete.
