Waiters invited to Team USA mini-camp in late July
Former Syracuse star Dion Waiters has been invited to the USA men’s national team mini-camp July 22-25,USA Basketball announced Wednesday in a release.
The Cleveland Cavaliers guard started 48 of 61 games as a rookie this year, averaging 14.7 points per game. Waiters left Syracuse after his sophomore season and was drafted 4th overall by the Cavaliers in last year’s NBA Draft.
The camp will allow head coach Mike Krzyzewski to look at players who could be added to the 2014-16 national team roster. Players who make that cut will be eligible to compete on the USA World Basketball Cup Team (formerly known as the FIBA World Championship) and the 2016 U.S. Olympic Team, assuming it qualifies.
The Cleveland Plain-Dealer first reported the story last week.
Waiters is expected to compete in the Las Vegas Summer League, immediately preceding the mini-camp.
