Junior advertising major Alex Speers describes her style as casual but trendy. To achieve this balance, she mixes higher and lower end brands. Her coat is Michael Kors and her layered tops are both from Nordstrom. Meanwhile, her jeans are from American Eagle, and her scarf is from Forever 21. Her shoes are classic Converse high tops.

Speers’ outfit shows the power of layering. Underneath her chic coat, she wears a cardigan top with a cool printed scarf-like detail, and underneath that, she wears a white top that has layered details on its own. Although there is a lot going on, the simple color palette keeps her look clean and stylish.

 

Take notes from Speers by piling on the clothes, but keeping each layer thin and simple. Stick to only one or two main colors to keep the look under control, but play around with texture and fun details. And if you’re going to add more volume to the top of the outfit, wear bottoms that will balance it out — boyfriend jeans with distressed details like Speers’ work better than skinny or straight styles.

Although Speers looks fashion-forward in today’s outfit, don’t expect her to be wearing the same thing next week. “I change it up a lot,” Speers said. I can’t wait to see what style she’ll be rocking next.
