The Syracuse University Student Association created new positions in the assembly to help engage new members.

Syracuse University’s Student Association is considering a bill that would create a committee to audit and regulate transparency between registered student organizations, including Greek organizations, and the general student body.

The bill, proposed by Ryan Golden, is not part of Chancellor Kent Syverud’s “top to bottom review” of Greek life, which began in April in response to the Theta Tau videos controversy.

The new committee will be tasked with crafting legislation to modify SA’s bylaws and suggest modifications to the Finance Codes to create more transparency, specifically about rejection and exclusion from RSOs.

Speaker Will Pritchett proposed a new financial holds resolution that would call on SU to end its current practice of restricting matriculated students from registering and attending classes while financial holds are in place.

The proposed resolution says that when students enter classes late due to financial holds, they struggle to catch up. The negative impacts of late entry extend to all students and faculty, it adds. The bill, which SA President Ghufran Salih said is supported by the University Senate, will be voted on next week.

“A lot of us know someone who has been through this, or we’ve been through it, so therefore we need to present the bill to the assembly to pass,” Salih said.

Pritchett, a junior in the College of Arts and Sciences, also introduced an amendment to allow using clickers instead of paper ballots while voting to save time and decrease waste.

The last resolution, which the assembly introduced, was a Transition Document Bill to mandate that all members of the cabinet update their transition documents to include any materials required for ongoing or future initiatives. The assembly will vote on the bill next week.

Eight new SA director positions were created within the assembly to promote engagement among the newest members. Some of the director positions include director of Department of Public Safety relations, director of parking and transit services and director of sustainability.

The positions will allow members to speak with administrators, Salih said. She added that they can do as much or as little work with the position as they want — even drafting bills with their designated relations. Their job is to act as a liaison between SA and other groups in the SU community.

CORRECTION: In a previous version of this article, the status of the Transition Document Bill was misstated. The assembly will vote on the bill next week. The Daily Orange regrets this error.
